Meet Abraham

Hey, I'm Abraham! I recently graduated from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where I majored in English with a concentration in film and media studies. At Grinnell, I was one of the editors in chief of The Scarlet & Black (the S&B for short), the College's student-run weekly newspaper. (Note: S&B links have been slow to load lately, but will after a minute or so!)

I started as a writer for the S&B and shifted into the position of arts and features editor after my first year. In 2021, I stepped into the role of editor in chief, co-leading our paper through an exciting period of transition as campus came back to life after over a year of remote learning.

My favorite pieces to write are reviews and profiles, like my take on season two of "Euphoria" or my feature on a small-town barbershop behind Iowa's apprenticeship program.

I have also written and edited many investigative articles that shed light on the personal stories behind institutional changes and events. I learned that the most difficult stories are often the most important, like this one which the Iowa College Media Association recognized as a runner-up in the Best News Reporting category.

Besides journalism, I also love to write fiction and creative nonfiction. I'm also interested in how contemporary fiction represents queer identity in the aftermath of abuse, a topic I pursued through a summer research project with Professor Steve Andrews. This culminated in a capstone essay, "A Different Way of Being," which won the Grinnell English Department's 2022 Selden Whitcomb Critical Essay Prize.

Since graduating, I moved back home to St. Paul and started a community engagement role at CLIMB Theatre, where I pursue sales and partnerships to bring educational theatre programming to Midwest schools. I'm interested in freelance writing and any other journalism, literary, and communications opportunities in the Twin Cities.
